British Gas take their first steps into heat pumps!

Posted

As the energy industry continues to move away from the use of fossil fuels in favour of low carbon alternatives, British Gas, the UK’s largest installer, has started work on the fitting of its first air source heat pump at a property in Woolacombe, North Devon.

The company is planning to install 20,000 heat pumps each year across the UK and, in further good news for the industry, is also planning to train 3,500 apprentices – who will be known as “Smart Energy Experts” – over the next decade in order to meet this target.

To offset some of the cost of heat pump installations, British Gas will offer a seven-year interest-free credit option in line with payments through the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). They also intend to be placed on the Boiler Upgrade Scheme once it replaces the RHI in April 2022.

Jana Siber, managing director at British Gas said: “There is a big challenge ahead of us to decarbonise UK homes. We’ve made a lot of progress in helping our customers use less energy with smart technology, and our first mass-market heat pump will now help them change the type of energy they use.”

“There will not be a single solution for every home but it’s important we act now to start customers on this journey. Heat pumps are an essential part of decarbonising heat and the momentum around this technology is building.”

Change isn’t coming. It’s already here…

Heat pumps are one of the most effective technologies for reducing our carbon footprint. The steps taken by British Gas into the industry will give confidence to consumers and the push installers need to prepare for the future demand, as heat pumps become the norm for homes across the UK.
