Air source heat pumps: How good are they?

How good is an air source heat pump? How much money can it save my client?

These are two of the most popular questions from our customers.

TV adverts, word of mouth and online adverts all promise that heat pumps will offer an awesome heating solution. But what they really want to know is, is it right for them?

The first thing to look at is the financials to see if this technology will suit your client. If they need a new heating system, the first priority is to get an idea of how heat pumps stack up against having a boiler fitted.

When installing an air source heat pump, homeowners receive payments for the first 7 years through the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). This government subsidy was introduced to encourage more eco-friendly purchases and is calculated based on the amount of renewable heat generated by the system. As a result, this can have quite a dramatic effect on the life cost of a heat pump in comparison to a boiler.

For example, when you take into account the subsidy after installing a Samsung 9kW Mono, the heat pump will incur a life cost of around £7,528 over 9 years. Compare this to a boiler, which would cost around £11,397 over the same period.

It’s much of the same when comparing other models with the traditional boiler, with all making considerable savings. Heat pumps represent a good opportunity to come ‘off-grid’ and begin making household savings.

The main question to ask here is can you install an air source heat pump in the garden and the internal unit somewhere in the house? If the answer is yes then a heat pump is most certainly a great choice for your client.

The only other question to ask is how willing is your client to adopt change? Gas and oil will be gone by 2050 as a form of heating. Early adoption of technology is a brave choice but absolutely necessary in order to tackle our Green Agenda.

If you are interested in the savings a heat pump could offer then please get in touch. A member of the team will get back to you to answer your questions and help find a solution that meets your clients’ requirements.
