According to new figures published this month from the Plumbing & Heating Merchant Index (PHMI), value sales through specialist plumbing and heating merchants are on the up.
What are the stats?
From March through May 2021, sales were 81.8% higher than the same period last year.
Year to date sales (January - May 2021) were up 36.5% on the same period last year and 3% ahead of January - May 2019.
Between June 2020 - May 2021, sales were 9.6% higher than the same period the year before.
The boost in sales has been supported by an extra trading day and fully open market, pointing largely to the continuation of a strong post-pandemic recovery – something we love to see!
Bill Davies, Sales Director at James Hargreaves Plumbing Depot, has said: “There are many good reasons for optimism in the UK plumbing and heating industry for the remainder of 2021, due to the general buoyancy of the marketplace and the extension of the stamp duty holiday. I am confident that this year will produce record sales for merchants.”
Davies also believes that there will be a further push towards low carbon solutions, with air source heat pumps now “becoming more and more an everyday request”.
It’s no surprise to see enquiries ramping up for merchants. The gas boiler ban is scheduled for 2025 and the government are even reinforcing the importance of heat pumps too by targeting 600,000 new installations by 2028.
But why heat pumps?
Heat pumps are considered a much more viable and environmentally friendly heating solution in comparison to alternatives such as hybrid heating systems. Rather than generating heat, they simply move it – pumping heat from outside a home into its hot water or heating system.
Lower running costs
Reduced carbon emissions
Provide cooling during the summer
Eligible for the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme
Combining their benefits, it’s clear that heat pumps provide a unique and smart investment opportunity for people to make more sustainable improvements to their homes. We’re no longer limited to solar panels or insulation; instead, we have the chance to make a real difference to the future of heating in the UK.
